Give a Smile To Get a Smile

Reciprocity.  It is a law that has been around forever and the most successful entrepreneurs have always embraced it.  What is this thing…reciprocity?  In short, you get what you give.  Whatever you put out comes back to you.  Good or bad.  How can this be?  Don’t ask me!  It’s just how the world works.  But here’s what I do know: You can use the law of reciprocity to grow your company quickly and healthily.  It works without fail.

For you to have a sustainable, growing business, you need to provide value to others. We all know that part, but there is more to it.  We need to deliver at a level where the client can’t pay it back.  What the hell does that mean?  We need to get paid for our service or product, no question.  But the value you deliver along with your service/product must be far in excess of the monetary exchange.  So far above that the client gets value beyond any price tag.  With the law of reciprocity that extra value will somehow, someway come back to you.

Don’t believe me, yet?  Try these simple experiments in reciprocity:

  1. Give a huge, genuine smile to the next person you talk with.  They smile back.  The law of reciprocity.
  2. Give your spare change to a homeless person.  Your heart fills.  The law of reciprocity.
  3. Flip the bird to the guy who cut you off.  He curses you out.  The law of reciprocity.

You see what I am saying? I understand those are simple examples, but the stuff I am about to tell you works too.  Without a fail, every time.

Here is how you apply it to business:

  1. Genuinely help other to become wealthy and you will become wealthy.
  2. Do whatever you can to help your colleagues and they will do the same for you.
  3. Be fanatically loyal to your clients and they will be fanatically loyal to your firm.
  4. Give without an expectation of return and you will receive without an expectation of return.
  5. Give a smile to get a smile.

This works both ways. Put out bad will and it comes back. Put out good will and it too comes back. We all should be putting out good will.

Wonderful Blog Mike.. And whatever you've said is totally true... You get what you give.. I have personally experienced this... The more nice you are to people, more nice things happen to you.
